Camino Photo of the Day: Chicken Coat of Arms
You might well be wondering why the arms of the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada have chickens on them. Lions and bears and eagles are more usual for this sort of thing – and indeed the lion of León and the castle of Castile also feature. But why chickens? Well, therein lies a tale. The legend is quite interesting – my map sums it up as “the legend of the roast chicken that crowed a condemned man’s innocence”. For a fuller explanation, see the bonus image from the cathedral museum, below.
Date: 09 April 2016
Place: Santo Domingo de la Calzada (La Rioja, Spain)
Bonus! The legend of the chickens.
Thomas,
Are you currently walking the Camino, NOW ?!?
Oh, no. This is part of my working through the Camino we walked this time last year.
I’m posting a photo a day, so it is often taking several weeks to get through a single day of last year’s Camino.
Hmm. I should probably put that notice up somewhere.
