Camino Photo of the Day: Santo Domingo
The Cathedral square of the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada was crowded with Confirmands and their families and godparents. We knew we wouldn’t have much time, but we ducked into the Cathedral itself to visit the saint. His story resonates pretty strongly with me. I won’t bore you with the details (that’s what Wikipedia is for), but here’s the core: he thought God was calling him to be a monk. He tried to gain admittance to two different monasteries, and they both sent him away. Instead, he found his mission for the people of God in a totally different place. He started by building a bridge for pilgrims at the site of the city that now bears his name. Then he spent the rest of his life working on the Camino, making it a true road by cutting trees, building embankments and causeways, and tamping flat the earth.
Santo Domingo de la Calzada, pray for us who have recourse to you.
