Camino Photo of the Day: the Doors of San Miguel
The main entrance to the Iglesia San Miguel in Estella is a wonder of Romanesque sculpture. The tympanum (that’s the bit over the doors) depicts Christ the Teacher enthroned, a favourite of early medieval Christian art in both the East and West. He is surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists and, flanking them, are the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint John. This means, of course, that Saint John is depicted twice: once as himself and once as the eagle symbolizing his Gospel. The arches above contain a panoply of angels and saints and Old Testament figures, now rather difficult to make out due to weathering and other damage.
