Novena to the Holy Deacons, Day 4: Saint Benjamin the Deacon
O glorious Saint Benjamin, constant preacher and Martyr for the Faith, filled with compassion for those who invoke you, I kneel at your feet and humbly beg you to take my present need under your special protection. Vouchsafe to recommend it to our Lord Jesus. Cease not to intercede for me until my request is granted. Above all, obtain for me the grace to one day meet God face to face, and with you and Mary and all the angels and saints praise Him through all eternity.
O most powerful Saint Benjamin, Deacon and martyr, do not let me lose my soul, but obtain for me the grace of entering heaven, forever and ever.
V Most holy Saint Benjamin, pray for us
R That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.
Saint Benjamin the Deacon
Benjamin was born in Persia. He was ordained a deacon of the Church, during a time when Christians were free from persecution in Persia.
Then, for 40 years under Kings Isdegerd, and then his son, Varanes, a general persecution was unleashed on Christians. Churches were destroyed, and Christians were tortured and imprisoned mercilessly.
Imprisoned for a year for his faith, he was released on condition that he never speak about Christianity where he could be heard by any of the royal court. Benjamin then became a street preacher, proclaiming the word any place he could find people. For his obstinate evangelization, he was arrested, tortured, and impaled on a stake c. AD 424.
