The Advent of Advent

Advent Wreath with Candles
Advent begins with tonight’s vespers, and tomorrow is the First Sunday of Advent.

Behold, the Name of the Lord comes from afar, and His glory fills all the earth.

Not sure exactly what Advent is? Here’s a two-minute snapshot.

Meanwhile, I’m doing my annual fumbling to remember how to pray the Office for Advent! Thank goodness for The Saints Will Arise.

Do you pray the traditional Benedictine Office then? Are you an oblate of Clear Creek? I’ve never visited and don’t have a traditional monastery near me otherwise I think I would have already pursued becoming an oblate myself.

Both my wife and I are Benedictine Oblates of Saint Martin Abbey in Lacey, Washington. At St. Martin’s, Oblates promise to “pray some form of the Divine Office” every day.

Over the years I’ve gone from edition to edition. I prayed the Liturgy of the Hours for several years, then Benedictine Daily Prayer from 2006 to 2014. In 2014, I switched to the traditional Office.
