A Pilgrim’s Prayer

O God, who brought your servant Abraham out of the land of the Chaldeans,
protecting him in his wanderings,
you who were the guide of the Hebrew people in the desert,
we ask that you deign to watch over us, your servants,
as for the love of your Name
we make pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

Be for us our companion along the path,
our guide at the crossroads,
our breath in our weariness,
our protection in danger,
our shelter on the Way,
our shade in the heat,
our light in the darkness,
our consolation in our discouragements, and
our firmness in our intentions,
in order that through your guidance
we might arrive unscathed at the end of our journey and,
enriched with graces and virtues,
we might return safely to our homes,
which even now lament our absence,
filled with salutary and lasting joy.

Through Jesus Christ Your Son, our Lord,
Who lives and reigns with You,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, forever and ever.

Amen.

Saint James: pray for us!

Saint Raphael: pray for us!

Holy Mary, Mother of God: pray for us!

(This pilgrim’s prayer is adapted from the one that appears in the 12th Century Codex Calixtinus, the first guide book for the Camino de Santiago.)
