Camino Photo of the Day: Entering Cirueña
This brand of steel art is endemic along this portion of the Camino. On the other side of the village, the pilgrim cut out from this piece stands on his own. A neat trick: two sculptures for the price of one. This village and the nearby village of Ciriñuela were the site of an enormous housing development that stands nearly empty, a result of Spain’s own housing bubble. There is enough housing here for thousands. Total population of Cirueña? Ninety-five. Ciriñuela? Thirty-seven.
They’re basically ghost towns. And I am going to be a ghost myself the next few days. I’ll be out of town and will not be posting until early next week. Have fun while I’m gone!
Three years after I took this photo, I took a photo of Francine in the same place. Nothing much had changed.
