Camino Photo of the Day: Iglesia de Santa María la Real

Although the village church in O Cebreiro was drastically renovated in the 1960s, the original bones of the pre-Romanesque church remain. It is said to be the oldest church on the entire Spanish Camino. The Holy Grail supposedly spent some time here as the local Christians spirited it away from Valencia ahead of the Moorish invasions1. It is also the site of a medieval Eucharistic miracle, the relics of which may be seen in a reliquary to this day. More on that another day!

Date: 25 April 2016
Place: O Cebreiro (Galicia, Spain)

  1. For more on how the Grail ended up in Valencia in the first place, check out my post on Saint Lawrence, whose feast day is today.
