Camino Photo of the Day: Iglesia de Santo Sepulcro
As it enters Estella, the Camino follows the bank of the Río Ega, which winds its way through the town. We soon pass by the the unfinished and partially ruined Iglesia de Santo Sepulcro. Construction began in the early 12th century, when the church was the headquarters of a group called the Cofradía del Santo Sepulcro (Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulcher). Work on the church continued in fits and starts until at least the 14th century, with some additional construction in the 16th century. In 1881, it ceased to be a parish, and the church has been closed to visitors ever since. What happened to the Brotherhood, I do not know.
