Camino Photo of the Day: Monte do Gozo
Monte do Gozo is a large hill crested by the Camino as it comes into Santiago. In centuries past, this is the place where pilgrims would first see the spires of the cathedral. There are records of pilgrims falling to their knees and singing the Te Deum. Nowadays due to urban sprawl, to see the spires you actually have to leave the Camino and walk twenty or thirty meters over the hill to get the view. This we have done each time, often singing the English Holy God, We Praise Thy Name. This bizarre monument was built at the crest of the hill when Pope John Paul II came to Santiago as a pilgrim in 1982. From this point, the remainder of the Camino is urban.
