Camino Photo of the Day: Puerta del Perdón

One of the first major buildings as you come into Villafranca del Bierzo is this church on the left hand side of the road, the blocky and imposing Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol. I’ve not ever actually been inside, as it’s been locked tight when we’ve walked past on our way into town. Another reason to stay in this town next time! This particular door is known as the Puerta del Perdón. This door is only opened in years of the Jacobean Jubilee. Tradition has it that in the year 1122 Pope Paschal II granted the Jubilee indulgences to pilgrims who arrived this far but, for health reasons, could not reach Santiago de Compostela.

And with that, I’m off cabining with some friends. See you all next week!
