Camino Photo of the Day: Saint Veremundo of Irache
This statue of San Veremundo stands in front of the Iglesia de la Asunción de Villatuerta. He is there identified as the patron saint of the Camino in Navarra. He was born in about the year 1020, and was abbot of the monastery of Santa María la Real de Irache from 1052 until his death in 1092. He was a staunch defender of the ancient Mozarabic rite, and he famously extended hospitality to pilgrims, which apparently included the very first fountain of wine on the Camino. Since there is a dispute between the villages of Arellano and Villatuerta as to where the saint was actually born, every five years the saint’s relics are moved by procession from one village to the other, notwithstanding the fact that his sepulchre may be found in the monastery in Irache.
