Camino Photo of the Day: Santa María de Roncesvalles
Before leaving Roncesvalles, we stopped into the thirteenth century Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María (Real Colegiata de Santa María de Roncesvalles), which is where the Augustinian friars who live here worship as they have done for 800 years.
Back in 2013, I had been privileged to be at their Pilgrims’ Mass, where three old friars chanted the psalms of Vespers and then the Mass. This time, though, there were no pilgrim throngs. It was empty, cool, and quiet: a lovely place to spend some moments in contemplation and prayer before the day’s walk.
Date: 31 March 2016
Place: Roncesvalles (Navarra, Spain)
Apologies for the blurry quality of the photo – I still haven’t really gotten the knack of indoor photos with my iPhone.
