Camino Photo of the Day: Santiago in Conques

In addition to holding the relics of Sainte-Foy and therefore being a site of pilgrimage in itself, Conques is the first major religious site on the pilgrimage route from Le Puy-en-Velay to Santiago de Compostela. Of course there is a small shrine to Saint James the Apostle in his depiction as a pilgrim (Santiago Peregrino / Saint-Jacques Pèlerin). While this little statue is not as flashy or impressive as some of those I encountered on the Way, there’s a sort of simple majesty to it. In particular, the expression on his face seems to me to have the same sort of weariness that one sees on the faces of the pilgrims in the cafés and gîtes along the Way. And… is he winking at us?
