Camino Photo of the Day: the Famous Causeway

Santo Domingo de la Calzada is so named because the saint spent his life improving the Camino road, and in particular he built the first causeway (calzada) over the Río Oja where this bridge now stands. Over the centuries, a series of flash floods on the river washed away several bridges on this site, and the current one mostly contains parts built in the 18th and 20th centuries. Since the bridge itself is an emblem of the town – it even appears on the town’s coat of arms – each successive rebuilding has kept to the original architectural style, even if done using modern materials.

The Camino still crosses this bridge on its way out of town, and so must we.
