This small medieval bridge, known as the Ponte Aspera – the bridge of the stars – crosses the Río Celerio. While we certainly appear to be walking through a forested countryside, I am given to understand that this bridge marks the limits of the town of Sarria. Just past the steps and the church of Santa Mariña, Sarria’s Rúa Major is crowded with pilgrim amenities: shops, bars, albergues. Many of these are indicated by these beautiful carved wooden signs. Seen here from near the bottom and also near the top, these steps are instantly remembered by any pilgrim walking through the town. After a long day’s hike, they are a terror to climb. Vigo is the last little village in the string before you get to the large town of Sarria.
