Walking the Camino de Santiago
Having crested the mountain pass at O Cebreiro the day before, we spent the morning climbing back down the other side. Our little Camino family rests at Alto do San Roque, in the shadow of the statue of a windswept pilgrim. It’s about 9 o’clock in the morning. Alto do San Roque is crowned with a titanic bronze statue of a windswept pilgrim. It’s difficult to get an idea of the size of this statue, which towers over the pilgrims standing near it. Parts of the village of Liñares are no doubt charming, but the aspect it presents to those on the Camino look decidedly like a truck stop. Following first breakfast in town, which consisted of boxed juice and factory-made pastries, we walk back past the Xunta Albergue to the Camino. O Cebreiro is at some altitude, and you can see Rebecca and Francine bundled up against the morning chill. Quite a difference from yesterday! The other side chapel of the Iglesia de Santa María la Real in O Cebreiro, dedicated to Santiago, contains what many would say is another miracle. This is the tomb of Don Elías Valiña Sampedro.
