Camino Primitivo: First Day Walking

I’m posting this in the early morning hours of May 10. Yesterday we walked our first stage of the Camino Primitivo, approximately 27 km.

We left our hotel just after dawn. The walk out of the city was cool and pleasant, although by the time we got into the countryside, the mist was already starting to burn off in the valleys. By mid-morning it was already brutally hot for us Pacific Northwest denizens.

The hilly area through which we walked was beautiful, and we were grateful for the stretches through the woods under the tree canopy. Much of the time, however, we were roadwalking in the open.

By the time we finally arrived at our quaint albergue in Grado, we were well and truly done. Great dinner at a local restaurant with pilgrims from all over the world.

Today is supposed to be hot, and we’re planning on starting early.

After quite a bit of finagling, our lost luggage caught up with us – the airline delivered it to our albergue. This means that today we will walk with hiking umbrellas to help keep out of the sun.

I’m really enjoying the countryside photos. Thanks for posting them and not compressing them. I checked out the Chapel of Fatima online. Looks like it hasn’t been painted since their image on the website.
