The Meseta Begins

For the past two days walking out ofBurgos, we have been entering into the Meseta.

This is the vast plateau that sits in the center of Spain. We will be walking this for about the next week or so.

And it is flat. Well, the top is flat, anyway.

Most of the towns are located in deep valleys carved out by millions of years of river erosion. So, coming into or leaving a town usually requires a bit of a climb down or a climb up.

Yesterday we walked about 23.5 km to Arroyo San-Bol. This charming and rustic albergue sits off by itself in the middle of nowhere. It features a community meal, because there is nowhere else to go.

Unlike when I was here three years ago, the electricity is now on all night. They seem to have swapped their gasoline generator for a solar one with batteries.

After yesterday’s long, long slog over rutted roads filled with mud, today we took a much shorter day – still over rutted roads filled with mud, of course.

We are in the medieval town of Castrojeriz. The town is laid out like a long ribbon that wraps around the base of a large hill. On top of the hill is the ruin of a medieval castle, built atop the site of an old Visigothic castle.
